Ms Sune Brugman possesses over 30 years’ experience across tax, financial engineering, risk management, investment banking, data and analytics as well as business transformation.

Her extensive career at Standard Bank Group spans over two decades, showcasing her versatility across pivotal roles from spearheading strategic scenario planning during the pandemic to pioneering data-driven decision-making as Chief Data and Analytics Officer.

As Chief Risk Officer for Corporate and Investment Banking, she revolutionized risk management, incorporating sustainability metrics and optimizing processes through automation. Her expertise in structuring, lending, and portfolio management was honed through positions like Global Head of Debt Products, where she oversaw teams across multiple regions. Beyond her professional achievements, Sune has actively mentored talent and contributed to educational institutions through board roles.

She is currently the Standard Bank Group Executive, Business Acceleration and Strategy for the Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) business with broad responsibility for restructuring, planning for and oversight of accelerating growth for CIB businesses on the African continent. Her role also includes the restructuring and repositioning businesses (including Technology, Data and Operational capability), as well as growth strategy and product and operational capability required for “start-up” or new franchises.

Prior to this, she was the Chief Data and Analytics Officer, Standard Bank Group from April 2021 to December 2022 where she was responsible for data and analytics for Standard Bank Group, enablement of a data led decisioning culture in client segments and support functions to enable revenue, cost and profit optimisation. She also led various data value creation initiatives with the goal for data and analytics to contribute 6% of overall Group revenues by 2025.

Between July 2020 and January 2022, Sune was the Group Executive Lead: Strategic scenario planning where she established and led a strategic scenario planning group / capability for the Standard Bank Group. This was the 4th element in the CEO’s office response to and management of the pandemic, and its impact and formed part of Board strategy setting during the period.

She has also occupied several Management roles across Standard Bank Group including Chief Risk Officer CIB, Global Head: Debt Products, Investment Banking, CIB as well as Structuring and Lending Units, Investment Banking, CIB with executive responsibility for Financial Engineering, Structuring, Structured Credit, Asset Based Finance, Corporate Lending and portfolio management businesses.

Sune obtained a BA and LL.B from the University of Stellenbosch as well as a Diploma in Tax from the University of Johannesburg. She also possesses a Mining Tax Certificate from the University of South Africa as well as a Certificate in Corporate Governance from INSEAD.
